Longines Global Champions Tour Rome: day 1

The Longines Global Champions Tour is the most prestigious circuit in the world of international show jumping – this year more than 10 million euro in prize money distributed in 15 fascinating venues – created by Jan Tops, Olympic rider gold medal in Barcelona in 1992 and now entrepreneur and sport technician, especially next to his wife Edwina Tops Alexander, lady rider in this level and team member along with Charlotte Casiraghi and Jessica Springsteen of the Gucci team, now in its tenth edition arrives, after the new leg of Miami, for the first time also in Italy in the Eternal City!
Longines, the main partner and official timekeeper of FEI, the International Equestrian Federation, and sponsor of all its major events, including precisely also the Longines Global Champions Tour, has come up with the organizing committee a truly unique and stunning show in the imposing frame of Stadio dei Marmi “Pietro Mennea”.
The stands of the stadium contained in the reservoir between the crown of statues, deliberately maintained with free access for the public, attracted and hosted thousands of fans. The riders made their entrance to the competition from the normal ramp lit stadium, arriving into the warm up area, divided from the arena through a portal for the jury and the technical services, specially built in glass for having the palace H of CONI, the Italian Olympic Committee, as background. The VIP, guest and riders area, was made in a lump sum throughout a long side of the oval, while the short housed the commercial and shops.

Nothing of this would have been possible without the fundamental collaboration of CONI, which made readily available to us the Stadio dei Marmi, the enthusiasm of the Italian Federation of Equestrian Sports, the collaboration of the Municipality of the City of Rome. And then of course Longines, our main sponsor. Here in Rome we had to build everything from scratch and we had to deal with a ‘behind the scenes’ and a logistics quite challenging. All this involves considerable costs and without Longines, our main partner, events like this would not be easily achievable. Besides the beauty of the location, it is crucial for us to offer to owners, riders and horses the maximum possible technical, sporting and comfortable level. One of the key aspects is related to the sand on which horses jump. The fact that we make it from scratch gives us all the guarantees to have perfect conditions. Equally important, for the safety of the horses and to ensure a show of the highest sporting level and fully respectful of the animal.

Il Longines Global Champions Tour, il circuito più prestigioso al mondo di salto ostacoli internazionale – quest’anno più di 10 milioni di euro di montepremi distribuiti in 15 fascinose tappe – ideato da Jan Tops, cavaliere medaglia d’oro olimpica a Barcellona nel 1992 ed ora imprenditore e tecnico sportivo, soprattutto accanto alla moglie Edwina Tops Alexander, amazzone affermata in tale livello e membro del team Gucci insieme a Charlotte Casiraghi e Jessica Springsteen, giunto alla sua decima edizione approda, dopo la nuova tappa di Miami, per la prima volta anche in Italia nella città eterna!
Longines, main partner e cronometrista ufficiale di FEI, la Federazione Equestre Internazionale, e sponsor di tutte le maggiori manifestazioni sportive, tra cui appunto anche il Longines Global Champions Tour, ha ideato insieme al comitato organizzatore uno spettacolo davvero unico nell’imponente e mozzafiato cornice di Stadio dei Marmi “Pietro Mennea”.
Le tribune contenute nell’invaso dello stadio tra la corona di statue, volutamente mantenute ad accesso gratuito per il pubblico, hanno attirato ed ospitato migliaia di appassionati. I binomi facevano il loro ingresso alla competizione dalla normale rampa di acceso allo stadio, giungendo all’aerea del campo prova, suddivisa da quello di gara mediante un portale destinato alla giuria e ai servizi tecnici, appositamente costruito in vetro per avere come sfondo il palazzo H del CONI, il Comitato Olimpico Nazionale Italiano. L’area vip, rider e guest, invece è stata realizzata in un’unica soluzione su tutto un lato lungo dell’ovale, mentre quello corto ospitava l’aera commerciale e gli stand.

Niente di tutto questo sarebbe stato possibile senza la fondamentale collaborazione del CONI, che ci ha messo prontamente a disposizione lo Stadio dei Marmi, il grande entusiasmo della Federazione Sport Equestri Italiana, e la collaborazione del Comune della Città di Roma. E poi naturalmente Longines, il nostro main sponsor. Qui a Roma abbiamo dovuto costruire tutto da zero e ci siamo dovuti occupare di un ‘dietro le quinte’ e di una logistica piuttosto impegnativa. Tutto questo comporta costi non indifferenti e senza Longines, il nostro partner, eventi come questo non sarebbero facilmente realizzabili. Oltre alla bellezza del contesto, per noi è fondamentale offrire a proprietari, cavalieri e cavalli il massimo possibile a livello tecnico, sportivo e di comfort. Uno degli aspetti chiave è relativo al terreno su cui i cavalli saltano. Il fatto di realizzarlo ex novo ci dà tutte le garanzie che servono per avere delle condizioni perfette. Altrettanto fondamentale, per la sicurezza dei cavalli e per garantire uno spettacolo di altissimo livello sportivo e pienamente rispettoso nei confronti dell’animale.

As usual two formulas, the CSI2 *, and CSI5* reserved for the thirty best riders of the Longines world ranking list for a total of fourteen classes (nine for the CSI2* and five for the CSI5*) that will be played all in daytime (in the morning those of CSI2* and in the afternoon those of the expected ones CSI5*). Friday started the competition, and the first “big” class was the 1.45 in tweo phases. Fiftyseven starters and it won just the British champion John Whitaker riding Castelfield Cristobal 21 who stopped the clock at 30.84 seconds at the second phase. Second place went to the Swiss rider Jane Richard Philips, Longines ambassador of elegance, riding Pablo de Virton (31.54), and the third to the Italian Emanuele Bianchi with Zycalin W (31.64).

I think I was quick to the first jump-off fence and kept going. Castlefield Cristobal 21 was fresh, and he’s on good form. He’s got potential, he’s 10 but he hasn’t had much experience, so hopefully he’ll do some Grand Prix next year. It’s a fantastic setting here in Rome and a beautiful arena. It looks good and I’m very much looking forward to the Grand Prix tomorrow.

Come di consueto due formule, il CSI2*, ed il CSI5* riservato ai trenta migliori cavalieri della Longines world ranking list, per un totale di quattordici categorie (nove per il CSI2* e cinque per il CSI5*) che si disputeranno tutte in diurna (al mattino quelle del CSI2* e nel pomeriggio quelle dell’atteso CSI5*). Venerdì al via il concorso, e la prima categoria “grossa” la 1.45 a fasi. Cinquantasette i partenti e a trionfare è stato il campione britannico John Whitaker che in sella a Castelfield Cristobal 21 ha fermato il cronometro della seconda fase a 30.84 secondi. Secondo posto per l’amazzone elvetica Jane Richard Philips, ambasciatrice dell’eleganza di Longines, in sella a Pablo de Virton (31.54), e terzo l’azzurro Emanuele Bianchi con Zycalin W (31.64).

Mi sono reso conto di esser veloce dopo il primo salto della seconda fase e ho continuato così. Castlefield Cristobal 21 era fresco, in forma. Ha potenziale, ha dieci anni ma non ha molta esperienza, quindi speriamo cominci qualche Gran Premio il prossimo anno. E’ un ambiente fantastico qui a Roma e una bellissima arena. E’ tutto bello e sono molto impaziente per il Gran Premio di domani.

Then it was the time of the last class of the day, the 1.50 against the clock with the arena at sunset that turns pink, which ended with the victory of an elusive French Simon Delestre that riding Chesall won the prize in a time of 37.55 seconds, against eleven pairs accessed to the decisive barrage. Tension for the Italian public thanks to the round of Agent of the State Forestry Corps, Emanuele Gaudiano on Admara 2 that finished second (38.69), while third place saw back on the podium the Englishman John Whiteker this time with Ornellaia (38.72). Barrage full of trepidation, made even more exciting by gritty American Jessica Springsteen on Davendy S, which has tried her best by recording the fastest time of the ranking class (36.74), however affected by four fault breaking down right the last jump, in front of the eyes not only of the spectators, but also of her father the legendary Bruce Springsteen and mother Patti Scialfa.

A seguire l’ultima categoria del giorno, la 1.50 a tempo con l’arena al tramonto che si tinge di rosa, conclusasi con la vittoria francese di un imprendibile Simon Delestre che in sella a Chesall si è aggiudicato il premio nel tempo di 37.55 secondi, su undici binomi acceduti al decisivo barrage. Tensione per il pubblico italiano grazie alla prova dell’agente del Corpo Forestale dello Stato, Emanuele Gaudiano su Admara 2 che si è classificato secondo (38.69), mentre la terza piazza ha visto di nuovo salire sul podio l’inglese John Whiteker questa volta con Ornellaia (38.72). Barrage pieno di trepidazione, reso ancora più emozionante dalla grintosissima statunitense Jessica Springsteen su Davendy S, che ha provato il tutto e per tutto registrando il miglior tempo della gara (36.74), condizionato però da un errore proprio sull’ultimo salto, davanti agli occhi non solo degli spettatori, ma del padre il mitico Bruce Springsteen e la madre Patti Scialfa.
